The debate over tipping has long raged throughout society, and many believe we have already surpassed the tipping point (no pun intended).

However, things have come to a head, again, after a man traveling through Newark Airport was given the option to leave a tip, after purchasing a $6 bottle of water, at a self-checkout kiosk!

26-year-old Garrett Bemiller calls the tipping culture at this point “emotional blackmail” after he was asked about leaving a tip at the self-checkout machine.

William Michael Lynn, who studies consumer behavior and tip culture as a professor at Cornell University’s Nolan School of Hotel, told the Wall Street Journal that businesses “are taking advantage of an opportunity.  Who wouldn’t want to get extra money at very little cost if you could?”

35-year-old Warren Williamson had a similar experience at an OTG in Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport in March.  Both Williamson and Bemiller declined to tip.

Williamson said, “I thought maybe I was going crazy.”

An OTG spokesperson said that all money collected as a tip is paid out to employees, and that tips at self-checkout machines are pooled among staff working that shift.

The spokesperson explained, “It is always our goal to create valuable experiences for our guests while taking care of our crew members, and the option to leave a tip if you have received assistance allows us to do both.”
