Starbucks’ new beverages may cause some people gastric distress, according to social media posts about the olive oil-infused “Oleato” drinks.

These arabica coffee offerings have around a spoonful of Partanna cold-pressed, extra virgin olive oil, Audacy reported in February. They debuted in Italy that month.

Now the drinks are also available at select locations in Chicago, Seattle, New York and Los Angeles. Currently, the Oleato line includes the Oleato Caffee Latte, the Oleato Iced Shaken Esperesso and the Oleato Golden Foam Cold Brew – others are available in Milan. Oleato beverages are also expected to be rolled out in Japan, the Middle East and the U.K.

“The alchemy of Starbucks arabica coffee and premium Partanna extra virgin olive oil creates an entirely new experience, taking on a depth and dimension that simply must be tasted to be believed,” according to Starbucks.

However, according to a report in TODAY citing a Reddit post, “Starbucks customers have taken to social media to share their experiences with the coffee chain’s new slate of olive oil-infused drinks, and apparently, for some, the picture is not so pretty.”

Starbucks also did not immediately respond to a request for comment, said TODAY.

Tasting Table also reported on the social media response to the drinks, from people who loved them to people who didn’t – and the reports of stomach issues. It noted that research have found that olive oil has laxative properties. Coffee can also have a laxative effect, according to McGill University.

Frances Largeman-Roth, a registered dietician nutritionist quoted by Today said that the impact of the drinks might be worst on an empty stomach.
So, those interested in trying out the Oleato drinks may want to make sure they grab a scone as well.
