The long-fought battle between delivery men and dogs may have to go on hiatus after one UPS driver saved the customer's two dogs from drowning while on a routine delivery.
Colin Mitchell was dropping packages at the Iowa home of Jeff and Rebecca Marra when he noticed that two dogs were swimming in the home's pool without anyone present, Local 12 reported.
Feeling uneasy about the situation, Mitchell said he attempted to call for the homeowners by knocking on the door, ringing the doorbell and yelling, "can your dogs swim?" which was caught on the ring camera, WDSU reported.
Not hearing a response, he took it upon himself to ensure the two animals were okay.
"As I approached the pool, I could see a dog hanging on the side, inside the pool, and I could see a dog swimming around on the solar cover," Mitchell told the station.
The dogs had somehow gotten through the pool gate, typically locked, before jumping into the pool with no way out.
Seeing the dogs struggling and fighting to get out of the pool, Mitchell took his shoes and socks off and jumped in, helping the families, smaller dog, Groot, and their bigger dog, Remington, get out of the pool.
While Groot was easy to get out, the 90-pound Remington was a bit more of a challenge, according to Mitchell.
"He took a little more leverage where I got my legs in the pool," Mitchell said. "I had to get a good grip on him, because the first time I was on my knees, I couldn't get him out, and then he swam back over to his corner and we tried again. I had to make sure I can get him out the second time. I didn't want them swimming back and forth a whole bunch of times."
His acts have even received support from UPS itself, who posted that his actions were "fur-tastic."
