As the ramp-up to next year’s Presidential election continues, former President Donald Trump remains the only high-profile Republican to have declared his intention to run, as he makes a second bid for a second term in the White House.
But being the only hopeful officially in the field doesn’t mean he’s in the lead.
A new poll conducted by the conservative Club for Growth showed Trump trailing bigly behind Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in a hypothetical Republican primary matchup.
When asked who they would pick if the primary came down to Trump and DeSantis, 49% chose DeSantis while just 40% chose Trump.
However, in a more crowded field, Trump still holds a slight edge.
Given a seven-person primary, 37% of respondents chose Trump, compared to 33% for DeSantis. Both had a sizable lead over the rest of the field though, with former Vice President Mike Pence running a distant third at just 7%.
The results are seemingly pointing to what could be a heated battle between two men who, once upon a time, were big supporters of one another.
Trump, in fact, has already begun flinging barbs at DeSantis, posting a veiled accusation on TruthSocial Tuesday that DeSantis was “grooming” underage girls during his time as a high school teacher.
Trump twice reposted a photo that had already been circulated on social media claiming to show DeSantis imbibing with underage girls at a party.
DeSantis responded to Trump through the media on Wednesday morning, saying his time is better spent battling President Joe Biden than “other Republicans.”
Given Trump's track record though, he isn't likely to back down in the coming months if DeSantis continues to pose a threat for the Presidential nomination.
