If you haven't been introduced to "Don't Say Gay," the Florida bill making its way to Governor Ron DeSantis's desk, then get ready, because every leftist celebrity is going to tell you about it sooner or later.
They'll tell you it's another attempt by right wing culture Nazis to stifle expression, or a way to control the minds of the youth or, as Colin Jost told Kate McKinnon on SNL this weekend, "the law actually means that you can't acknowledge that gay exists at all."
But here are the facts:
- The bill eliminates divisive LGBTQ+ topics from public curriculum for young children.
- It applies only to Kindergarten through 3rd grade.
- It is meant to encourage teachers to direct those conversations back to parents & the home.
DeSantis is carrying a big stick and swinging it from the podium, forcing the media to acknowledge these facts. Sunday he said, "The idea that you wouldn't be honest about that, and tell people what it actually says... it's why people don't trust people like you because you peddle false narratives, and so we disabuse you of those narratives."
Unfortunately, this says far more about the media, and disinformation, than it does the bill itself. It's why even in the midst of an actual war breaking out where one madman tries to steal an entire neighboring country, those who've been through this wash cycle are very tepid to believe anything and get on board with otherwise good causes. Because the power brokers who are "all in" on defending Ukraine are very people who couldn't be trusted to deliver even the smallest morsels of truth for the last 2-5 years, and continue to do it this very minute with this Florida curriculum bill.
Meanwhile, no one will censor the parrots on social media who continue to push these false notions about "Don't Say Gay" as either deliberate disinformation or confirmation-bias misinformation. In fact, the name itself is false.
So pardon the independents and the skeptics as they try to wave away the fog before having strong convictions on whatever topic is headlining today.
