Jameson Williams sounded confused last week when he was asked about his Twitter activity this offseason, specifically about liking a tweet advocating for the Lions to trade for Lamar Jackson.
"I'm not really sure why people question me or anything like that. I'm out here with Jared Goff, not Lamar Jackson," Williams said. "I just think (Jackson's) a real good player."
Goff sounded bemused when he was asked about the same thing Tuesday.
"You guys are bored, huh?" he said.
"It’s alright," Goff went on. "He likes Lamar and that’s okay. I have a lot of receivers I like, but I like Jamo and we’re gonna have a lot of fun this year.”
The fun won't start officially until at least Week 7, when Williams is eligible to return from a six-game suspension for violating the NFL's gambling policy. To ensure he builds chemistry with the former No. 12 pick, who caught just one pass in six games last season after recovering from a torn ACL, Goff said he's "just keeping him involved" throughout the Lions' offseason program, which continues this week with mandatory minicamp.
Williams can practice with the team until Week 1 of the season, when his suspension begins.
"He’s done a great job up to this point of getting himself ready and just continuing to work," said Goff. "We didn’t get the reps last year at this time and being able to dive into some of this stuff has been so important for us. We can’t wait to get him back. It’s unfortunate what happened, but he’s had a good attitude about it and has approached it the right way.”
Williams further clarified last week that his endorsement of Jackson wasn't a shot at Goff: "I love Goff. We out here, we got a perfect relationship. It's just a liked tweet. Nothing went down in our relationship. We still have a tight relationship. It's social media. It's Twitter."
And speaking of social media, Goff was also asked Tuesday about recently following DeAndre Hopkins on Instagram and said, "Hell of a player." Hopkins, a free agent after being released by the Cardinals, is a rumored fit for the Lions.
Asked if he's had any contact with Hopkins about potentially signing with Detroit, Goff said, "No, he’s a great player.”
