Longtime football matchup between TCU and SMU to be put on “indefinite pause" following 2025 season

A matchup college football fans in North Texas look forward to every year is The Iron Skillet, the annual game between the TCO Horned Frogs and SMU Mustangs.

Unfortunately, fans will need to soak in the atmosphere all they can over the next few seasons, because after the 2025 season, we might not see this matchup again.

College football insider Brett McMurphy is reporting that following the 2025 season, TCU will be be putting the annual matchup with SMU on an “indefinite pause.”

Per WFAA, the schools have played each other a total 101 times since the series began in 1915. TCU leads the series 52-42-7.

Neither school has provided an official reason for pausing the rivalry.

SMU and TCU are scheduled to play this season on September 23 in Fort Worth.
