CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A camera shop that had operated in the Loop for decades before being burned out during May’s protest violence has announced plans to reopen.

Central Camera in the 200 block of South Wabash Avenue announced this week on social media that it will open a temporary store at 228 S. Wabash around Sept. 1, with the ultimate plan to reopen at 230 S. Wabash by late January 2021, if not earlier.

An online fundraiser has helped owners rise from the wreckage. Owner Don Flesch said he bears rioters no ill will and agrees the death of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police was an injustice.

In recent years, the old-school camera shop continued to prosper even as the world around it converted largely to digital. It also served as a museum of sorts for the semi-lost art of photography.
