Did you know that “World Kindness Day” is coming up? That’s right – on November 13th, just two weeks before Thanksgiving, this international holiday gives us all a chance to spread happiness beyond the dinner table! With so many things to worry about as the year winds down, showing kindness to others can be like a nice warm bowl of soup for the soul. Our friends Virtua Health gave us the recipe for that perfect bowl to warm our hearts as the days get colder.

So, if you didn’t know about World Kindness Day before, now you know! Take this opportunity to celebrate World Kindness Day with these 5 easy ways to be kinder to your friends, loved ones, and members of your community.

Plan to Be Kind
Ever had that frantic rush of buying holiday gifts for your friends and family hours before you give the gift? Yep, that’s almost all of us...
almost every year. But what if life didn’t have to be that way?

Pro tip: NOW is the perfect time to start making a plan for who gets what gift. Grab a notebook, a Post-it, or even pull up a spreadsheet to help you plan out that perfect gift strategy.

Also, now’s the time to pay attention – next time you’re on the phone with a sibling, or you hear your niece or nephew jumping up and down for the newest toy, take notes! It’s all worth it to see their eyes light up when they finally open that present – and it’s exactly what they wanted.

Practice Random Acts of Kindness
As the days get shorter and colder, we all need some warmth to keep us going. Even if you’re not the type to chat about the weather with a next-door neighbor, you can still share warm and fuzzy moments with acquaintances, and even with complete strangers. Hold open that door, compliment those shoes, and give a friendly smile to the postal worker in your neighborhood! Who knows how your small acts of kindness will keep spreading throughout the day?

Kindness in Community
It’s easier than you think to get involved with volunteer opportunities in your community. A quick Google search will give you a list of soup kitchens, food pantries, clothing drives, and more in your area, and there’s almost always more help needed. Even if you don’t have much experience with volunteering, an hour or two serving your community is pretty much all you need to make a difference and make someone smile.

Pay It Forward
Don’t stop now – keep it going! If someone near you makes you smile with a kind act, start a chain by passing it along to someone else! Those kind gesture will ripple out to make a huge kindness wave!

Be Kind to Yourself
Now, if you’re thinking “That sounds great, I’ll go out and do these things now” – hold your horses! Kindness always starts from within, so make sure to start by showing yourself some kindness first. Put on your favorite song, have a nice warm bath, or treat yourself to your favorite meal.
Once you feel warm inside, that warmth will naturally radiate to others!
