The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to find that solid primary care provider (PCP) and put an annual physical on your calendar. Honestly, so is the end of an old year. On second thought, anytime is a great time, so long as it happens!
So, let’s say you have a great PCP – funny jokes, listens to you, great at connecting you to resources that benefit your health. That’s only half of the story! While doctors are literally paid to have immense knowledge of the human body, they work best with you as a team to understand your unique needs. On the patient side, we all have a responsibility to advocate for ourselves and raise good questions that will lead us towards a healthier life.
After all, the person who knows the best about your health, your body, that interesting-looking welt on your left pinky finger… is YOU.
So, when you hit the doctor’s office, what kinds of questions do you ask? We asked our friends at Virtua Health to come up with some of the most helpful questions to start. That way, you can be prepared next time you meet with your PCP, and really put them in the hot seat – or, if you prefer, “hot antimicrobial vinyl stool”.
Am I up to date on all my vaccinations?
RSV, Covid, influenza… oh my! These are only the viruses that have been making news year after year. If you start counting the other vaccinations that one needs to stay on top of such as the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), Hepatitis B, and Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough), you’ll get overwhelmed quickly. Why not run it by your doctor to see which vaccinations might be due?
Is (condition) normal for my age?
Visiting your PCP is the perfect time to get a benchmark for various aspects of your health. Sometimes, with metrics such as your blood pressure, it might take a moment to confirm where you stand. Other times, there might be a more complicated answer. Either way, if you have any concerns, don’t be afraid to ask this question!
Is there anything I should be concerned about with my family history?
There’s a reason why you spend the better part of a half-hour answering a questionnaire during your first doctor’s visit. Your doctor wants to have a full picture of your health, and that might be informed by what conditions run in your family. You can’t go wrong by asking if any family history you’ve provided might be a cause for concern, or even heightened attention.
What steps can I take to prevent (condition)?
Preventative care is the name of the game! If you are aware of any conditions that may arise because of family history or lifestyle habits, you can be sure your doctor will be happy to tell you ways to steer away from any adverse health outcomes. After all, an apple a day is so passé.
Do you recommend I see a specialist for (condition)?
Often, your PCP is your first reference for health conditions that may arise, but they won’t hesitate to refer you to a specialist if more care is needed. Go ahead and ask this question if you’re seeking further advice.
How can I best get in touch with you if I have any other questions?
Once you’ve asked all those juicy questions, make sure you follow up by asking your doctor how you can get in contact. If you’re having new symptoms or questions about a test result, you want to make sure that you can follow up in a timely manner.
