For some of us, water is life. And for others, it’s cruel that something making up about two-thirds of your body AND the Earth could be so incredibly boring! Maybe you’ve tried being diligent, or maybe it’s just easy for you to forget during a busy day. Either way, it can be such a chore to make sure you’re properly hydrated daily, leading to unintended health effects such as dehydration, sluggishness, and digestive issues, among other things. That’s why it can be helpful to trick your mind into the habit, and our friends at Virtua Health have compiled this list of super-sneaky methods for getting your H2O in before your brain knows what hit it.

Set reminders on your phone.
One of the best ways to trick your body into drinking more water is to delegate the habit-building to your phone. Sometimes, all the brain needs to stay on track is a quick nudge in the right direction, and nothing could be simpler than setting reminders on your phone to tell you when, how often, and how much water to drink throughout the day.

Replace soda with seltzer.
You may think that it’s impossible to beat a nice, cold Coke with dinner – but it turns out it’s entirely possible! Next time you get the chance, try swapping out a sweet fizzy beverage with a pleasantly flavored seltzer. You might find that if you’re drinking seltzer with a meal, your food will really have a chance to shine without all that sugar stealing the show.
Before you know it you won’t even notice that you don’t miss the sweetness, and the refreshing bubbles and light flavor is just as satisfying.

Have a cold glass in the morning.
If you’re feeling groggy and struggling to get out of bed in the morning, there’s a chance that you might be feeling dehydrated. Before firing up the coffee maker for the day, try fixing a glass of cold, fresh water and see if it makes a difference. The temperature of the water will ease you awake, and your body will thank you for the extra hydration.

Put that Stanley Cup to good use.
With all the hype that the Stanley Cups have stirred up lately, chances are you either have one, are looking forward to getting the latest drop, or feeling an inexplicable sense of FOMO despite your greatest efforts. If the latest water bottle trend has got you in a headlock, why not use the purchase as motivation to drink more water? Don’t be like everyone else and let your cups gather dust in the back of your cabinets. Make sure that if you had a dollar for every time you used the latest viral cup, you’ll have at least the $45 you spent to get it in the first place!

Dilute sugary beverages.
Here’s a trick – next time you have a sugary drink in your fridge, why not combine it with some seltzer to make a light soda? Or, if you add some water, you might find that the result is more refreshing and less cloying than expected.

Add fruity flavors to your water.
While water is an essential ingredient to a healthy diet, let’s face it – the flavor is giving absolutely nothing. Sure, filtered water is a huge step up from tap, and seltzer can bring some pizzazz, but if you need a little more, don’t be afraid to add a bit of flavor to your water. You can get an infuser and add some fresh fruits to your drink (cucumber and strawberries are heavy-hitters), or a few drops of lemon juice might do the trick.

While you’re at it, eat more fruits (and veggies)!
If you enjoy the flavor of fruit-infused water, there’s more where that came from – fruits! At the end of the day, water is water, regardless of how it’s packaged. As long as you’re getting enough foods that are high in water content, like oranges, grapes, or iceberg lettuce, you’ll hit your water quota in no time.
