The days are getting longer, the air warmer, and you always feel like you’re on the verge of a sneeze that never comes… and that’s when you realize it. SPRING IS FINALLY HERE!
That’s right, it’s springtime – but if those beautiful sun rays start to reveal the piles of clutter around your house, that might mean that it’s time for a refresh. Before you get to work, check out these spring-cleaning pro-tips brought to you by our friends at Virtua Health.
Toothpaste – it’s not just for teeth.
Who’d’ve thunk it? Toothpaste has many purposes besides polishing off your pearly whites. The ingredients in toothpaste are mildly abrasive, which allows it to gently sand down the grime, rust, and mineral deposits that may be sitting on the surfaces in your house. You can use it to polish your kitchen sink, get the gunk off your flat iron, put the shine back in your car’s headlights, and much more – leaving everything with a nice, minty-fresh scent. Just make sure that you’re using plain white toothpaste – not the whitening kind, and certainly no gels or charcoal. Happy brushing!
Deep clean your washing machine.
You know that saying, “Check up on your strong friends”? The idea that the people in your life who give you the most support are the ones who people forget to give support to? Yeah, all of that applies to your washing machine. Happily, dutifully washing away all of the sweat and muck from your clothes… well, it’s a matter of time before that sweat and muck starts to build up in the machine itself. The good news is, it’s super easy to wash a washing machine. Just grab some white distilled vinegar, baking soda, or bleach, and use Google to look up the correct ratios to add to your washing machine. And voilà! Bestie is back in action.
While your at it, throw your pillows in the wash.
Similarly to your washing machine, your pillows are always there when you need them most – but also one of our most neglected household items. Also similarly to your washing machine, they’re super easy to clean.
Just toss two pillows (for balance) into your machine, use a tiny amount of detergent, and get it going on a gentle cycle. Then, tumble-dry on low, or air-dry outside on a sunny day.
Give your baseboards some TLC.
If you’ve already decluttered and still feel like your space has a dull, dusty look, your baseboards are probably to blame. Keeping them clean is a subtle but effective way to make your space look sparkly clean. Grab a hand duster or microfiber cloth, dampen with an all-purpose cleaner, and give them a quick wipe.
Refill your first-aid kit.
If you want to be prepared for any scenario, why not give your first-aid kit a restocking? And if you don’t have one yet, now’s the perfect time! Pick up some Band-Aids, ointment, rubbing alcohol, and any other items that might be needed in a pinch. Make sure your kit has plenty of space and compartments for organizing, and that you can grab it to-go if needed.
Do a spice cabinet check.
You’ve already probably been meaning to do this, and now’s the perfect time! Make a list of all of the spices that make you go “Shoot, we never have any [insert spice here]” whenever you’re cooking, and pick them up on your next shopping trip!
Don’t get ready. Stay ready.
The best way to have a successful spring cleaning is to make sure it’s not such a monumental task each year – and the best way to do that is to try and tidy up regularly throughout the year. You can set reminders to deep-clean different rooms, have a “fall cleaning” sesh, or anything that lifts the load a bit.
Best of luck to you on your scrubbing, buffing, and sprucing journey!
