Can we please normalize those awkward OB/GYN questions? | Queen Bee

Let's not sugarcoat it: OB/GYN appointments are awkward. And honestly, it's perfectly normal to feel a bit anxious before visiting your gyno. I mean, not every woman likes having her lady bits on full display.

But despite the nerves – you should never, ever feel an ounce of embarrassment while visiting your OB/GYN. Your gyno's office is a safe, judgment-free space. And believe us when we tell you: they have heard and seen it all, literally.

So before you fall down a Google rabbit hole of misinformation – we sat down with Dr. Stacy McCrosson, an OB/GYN with Virtua Health, to talk through some questions you definitely should be asking your doctor.

Um, is that smell normal?
"Every woman has a smell down there," says Dr. McCrosson. "Most times, a smell isn't necessarily a cause for concern. But since it can be a sign of an infection, definitely ask your OB/GYN about it."

Is leaking normal?
"If you've been peeing a little when you sneeze, laugh, cough, or exercise – it's pretty common," she says. "It's even more common if you've given birth. But that doesn't mean you have to live with it. Talk with your gyno about treatment options."

Why does sex hurt?
"First things first: sex should never hurt," says Dr. McCrosson. "Don't be afraid to tell your OB/GYN about it—pain or other problems with sex have many causes, and they're treatable. Regardless of the issue—your doctor can pinpoint the cause and offer solutions."

Should I be worried about that bump?
"Lumps and bumps are never fun—it's natural to worry if you find something," she says. "Before you get stressed out, please know that bumps are pretty common. It could be an ingrown hair or even a pimple. But just in case, make sure you talk to your doctor about it."

Why am I so itchy down there?
"Persistent, nagging itching could be worrisome. Mainly because it's a sign of an infection," says Dr. McCrosson. "But, it could also mean your pants are too tight, or a brand of soap disagrees with you. The point is: please tell your doctor."
