Name recognition? Check. Blue blood school? Check. Solid numbers? Check. Highlight reel plays? Check. There’s not much that Duke Blue Devils star freshman Cooper Flagg doesn’t have working in his favor and he’s now listed at +400 to win the Wooden Award at BetMGM, behind only Auburn’s Johni Broome (-250). Marquette’s Kam Jones (+450) is the only other player in the mix right now.
Broome has put up 18.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists for #2 Auburn (11-1). The 6’10, 240-pound senior big man has been the favorite for this award after getting off to a hot start early in the year and has held onto it ever since. Jones has averaged 20.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.4 assists for #9 Marquette (11-2) and has been a similarly-sensational senior.
However, neither of those two players have the name recognition or status that Flagg has. The freshman is averaging 16.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists for #5 Duke (10-2) and leads his team in all three categories. As the presumptive No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, Flagg will undoubtedly be a one-and-done collegiate player and will have a minimum of 15 nationally-televised games coming up in conference play.
Not only that, but when going up against Broome head-to-head, Flagg went off with 22 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in an 84-78 win, Auburn’s only loss so far. Broome had 20 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in that one, but Flagg and his team had the slight edge. Flagg also dropped 26 points against then-#19 Kentucky and 24 points against then-#17 Arizona in two other tests against ranked opponents.
At +400, this is the time to back Flagg before he thrives in conference play and, in turn, becomes even more of a household name heading down the stretch.
