The college football season is rolling along this week with some big games on the schedule, including key conference matchups. While there is plenty of time to break down matchups and look for value, we figured we’d share some of the games that stood out at first glance as betting lines to target for the fourth week of the college football season.
Penn State (-49) vs. Kent State
Kent State gave up 65 points against Tennessee last week. Check that, the Golden Flashes gave up 65 points in the first half before Tennessee coasted to a 71-0 win. They’ve also lost to an FCS school and gave up 55 points to Pitt in their season opener. Despite scoring just 34 points in each of their first two games, Penn State should have no problem running up the score against Kent State with a strong running game and an experienced quarterback. This is Penn State’s last chance to get ready for conference play, so the Nittany Lions aren’t going to hold anything back.
Houston (+5) at Cincinnati
This hasn’t been a great start to the Willie Fritz era in Houston. However, the Cougars went toe-to-toe with Oklahoma on the road a couple of weeks ago. They should at least be able to force a low-scoring defensive slugfest that allows them to stay within five points. The Bearcats haven’t exactly impressed either, blowing a 21-point lead against Pitt and playing down to Miami (Ohio) in a lackluster 27-16 win last week. The Cougars have faced bigger challenges thus far and should be more prepared for this game.
South Carolina (-27) vs. Akron
A close loss to LSU last week should get South Carolina’s attention and give them something to prove. With a bye next week, the Gamecocks won’t be looking past Akron, which is why eating the points makes sense in this game. After all, the Gamecocks have a 25-point win over Kentucky on their resume. As for the Zips, they were outscored 101-23 across losses to Ohio State and Rutgers. If the Scarlet Knights can beat Akron by over 30 points, South Carolina can do the same.
South Florida (+17.5) vs. Miami
Everything is going according to plan for the Hurricanes thus far. But their 41-17 road win over Florida looks a little less impressive every week. This week's game at USF might be their biggest test of the season thus far, as the Bulls are arguably the second-best team in the Sunshine State. The USF players will surely feel like there is a chip on their shoulder against Miami. Keep in mind that the Bulls went to Tuscaloosa a couple of weeks ago and played an even game with Alabama for three quarters. This won’t be an easy game and USF should beat the spread against the Hurricanes just like they did against Alabama.
