Last week, the likes of Kentucky, Arizona, and Louisiana all pulled off upsets, with a few others coming awfully close. There will almost certainly be more upsets in college football this weekend. The only question is what teams will be able to pull off the upset and are worth taking a chance on as an underdog. Here are three underdogs we think are worth targeting in Week 6 of the college football season.
Stanford (+260) vs. Virginia Tech
Stanford won as an underdog two weeks ago in the team’s ACC opener, so why can’t the Cardinal do the same in its first-ever ACC home game. Admittedly, the Cardinal were outclassed by Clemson last week. But Stanford was still able to run the ball effectively against the Tigers. Quarterback Ashton Daniels can be a menace with his legs while wide receiver Elic Ayomanor is a next-level player. The Stanford defense also has a fierce defensive line that was able to disrupt Syracuse's vaunted passing attack in an upset win two weeks ago. That gives the Cardinal plenty of pieces to pull off another upset.
As for the Hokies, they might be due for a letdown after failing to finish off an upset bid over Miami last week. They also have to travel to California, which isn’t something ACC teams are accustomed to doing. Virginia Tech’s road loss to Vanderbilt, home loss to Rutgers, and failure to cover the spread against Marshall are all results that don’t exactly paint the Hokies as a trustworthy road favorite.Quarterback Kryon Drones has failed to throw for 200 yards in four straight games and has thrown an interception in three straight games. He’s also completed fewer than 60% of his passes this season. Look for the Stanford defense to give him problems, opening the door for the Cardinal to win.
South Carolina (+270) vs. #12 Ole Miss
Exactly what has Ole Miss accomplished this year to be a nearly 10-point road favorite against South Carolina. A 40-6 win over a 1-3 Wake Forest team that lost to Louisiana last week is the most impressive win the Rebels have this season. They lost as 15-point home favorites last week against a Kentucky team that South Carolina blew out 31-6 as a road underdog earlier this season. While Ole Miss is among the national leaders both offensively and defensively, that’s largely a result of beating up on overmatched teams like Furman, Middle Tennessee, and Georgia Southern. The Rebels faltered when challenged last week, so they’re worth fading again this week.
Also, this South Carolina team is no joke. As mentioned, the Gamecocks blew out Kentucky on the road early in the season and probably should have upset LSU at home. This week’s game gives South Carolina a second chance to beat a ranked team. There are certainly lessons for the Gamecocks to learn from that near miss against LSU. They also won’t be intimidated against a ranked team, knowing they can go toe-to-toe with anyone. That makes the Gamecocks a great candidate to finish what they started against LSU and beat Ole Miss this week.
Texas Tech (+170) at Arizona
Arizona is fresh off a shocking road upset of Utah last week. But is that the Arizona team we’ll see this week or will we see the Wildcats who got blown out by Kansas State and looked unimpressive in a 22-10 victory over Northern Arizona? The Wildcats are changing offensive play callers ahead of this week’s game against Texas Tech, which is a sign that things just aren’t clicking for them. Why else make a change like that after a huge win? That’s a sign that the Wildcats could be a vulnerable home favorite this week.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech has bounced back nicely after losing to Washington State early in the season. The Red Raiders have won three in a row after surviving a shootout with Cincinnati last week. Quarterback Behren Morton has eight touchdown passes and no interceptions during the team’s three-game winning streak. Even with some questions about the Texas Tech defense, the Red Raiders will have no problem getting into a shootout with the Wildcats. At this point, the Texas Tech offense is more reliable than the Arizona offense, giving Texas Tech the edge if this turns into a shootout.
