In Week 15, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs (13-1) to yet another victory against the Browns, but suffered an ankle injury that will put his status into question moving forward.
With an odd schedule featuring games on Saturday, December 21 (vs. Houston), Wednesday, December 25 (at Pittsburgh) and Sunday, January 5 (at Broncos), I don’t see a reason why Mahomes should play another snap in the regular season, especially with a two-game lead over the Bills for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The Christmas Day game will be KC’s third game in 11 days, which is absurd for an NFL team to have to deal with, especially the back-to-back champs.
Mahomes is out of the MVP race (3,346 passing yards, 22 TD, 11 INT), the team isn’t chasing any regular season record of any sort and very capable backup Carson Wentz will be able to navigate the offense for these last three games. A three-peat champion has never been crowned in the NFL and that’s the ultimate goal Kansas City is after. There’s simply no reason to take an unnecessary risk and put the franchise quarterback back in harm’s way until the playoffs.
Heading into Week 16, the Chiefs (+550) have the 4th-best odds to win the Super Bowl at BetMGM, trailing the Lions (+400), Bills (+425) and Eagles (+450) and the 2nd-best odds to win the AFC (+225), trailing Buffalo (+175).
