Eagles Make NFL History in NFC Championship Win Over Commanders

Philadelphia's dominant 55-23 victory featured a record-setting combination of offensive and defensive excellence.

The Philadelphia Eagles notched an historic victory on Sunday over the Washington Commanders, and not just because they clinched their ticket to Super Bowl LIX. They totally and completely destroyed Washington in one of the most dominant performances we have ever seen on their way to a 55-23 victory in the NFC Championship. In fact, you have never seen a performance quite like that one before, as the Eagles accomplished a feat no other team has in NFL history.

According to OptaStats on X, we just witnessed history on Sunday.

That’s right: no other team in NFL history has done all of that in the same game (regular season or postseason)!

Indeed, that has to be one of the most impressive performances we have ever seen. Washington had absolutely no answer for the Eagles offense, as the birds averaged a whopping 7.0 yards per play, including a ridiculous 229 yards on the ground. We knew coming into the game that the Commanders biggest weakness was their inability to stop the run, ranking 30th in that category, and that played out emphatically in this game.

However, the reason they won by such a huge margin wasn’t just about the Eagles being able to move the ball at will. I have preached this time and time again, but the most important part of any team winning a game is how they do in the turnover department. The team that wins the turnover battle has their chances at winning dramatically increase, and Philadelphia dominated there as well.

Washington turned the ball over four times in the game, while the Eagles didn’t make a single mistake. Due to all of those turnovers, Philly was set up in some very advantageous positions in the game, and were able to capitalize on them almost every single time. It’s nearly impossible to win when you commit four turnovers, as the Commanders discovered on Sunday, and it often will end in a complete blowout like we saw.

If the Eagles want to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, they are going to have to have another turnover free performance. Interestingly, the Chiefs lost the turnover battle against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship, but still managed to win the game as they always somehow seem to do. It will take a flawless performance to defeat them, although a repeat of this kind of performance seems quite unlikely.
