It is very difficult to be a Tennessee Titans fan right now. The team is just 2-8 on the season, but it has felt far worse than even that, as they are also 1-9 ATS on the year. So, not only are they a really bad football team, but they are not even meeting the low expectations they are given each week. This is the worst ATS mark in the NFL this season, and is quickly becoming one of the worst we have ever seen, entering the Top-5 worst ATS starts we have seen in the Super Bowl Era.
Only two teams since 1990 have started 1-9 ATS or worse and the 1972 and 1984 Houston Oilers started 1-10 ATS as well, which was the worst in the Super Bowl Era. As you can see, the 2024 Titans are entering historically bad territory.
Their one cover this season came back in September, when the Titans traveled down to Miami and beat a Tyler Huntley-led Dolphins team. Just imagine if Miami had Tua Tagovailoa for the game, Tennessee could be looking at 0-10 ATS right now. Earlier this month, they beat the New England Patriots 20-17 in OT, but closed as a -3.5 favorite, so they just barely failed to cover by the hook.
In the very first week of the season, they took a 17-0 lead over the Bears as a four point underdog, before losing the game 24-17. According to Action Network, underdogs of at least four points to lead by 17+ at any point in the game were 66-1-1 ATS since 2019 before that. That is just an incredible amount of incompetence, especially to have that happen against the team that defines incompetence in the Bears.
Let's be honest, the Titans don’t have much talent to begin with, and they also have no answer at the QB position. I think it is pretty clear that neither Will Levis or Mason Rudolph are the solution to their woes, so they will be looking to draft a new signal-caller sooner rather than later. Levis started the one game that the team covered, but to be fair, Rudolph played a majority of that game after Levis left with an injury.
They won’t be this terrible to end the year, and they should cover at least a couple more games, but it won’t be easy. They are huge +8.5 underdogs on the road against the Houston Texans. Absolutely no one is going to be betting on them. The one gleam of solace that they can have is that the sportsbooks are going to need them terribly in the last half of the season. I think they are live for one big upset the rest of the way, and a couple of covers.
The 2007 Ravens managed to go 3-13 ATS and 5-11 SU as the most recent team to be this bad when it comes to covering. Even the 2008 0-16 SU Detroit Lions were better, going 7-9 ATS. We will see if the Titans can do better or if they will be doomed to the bowels of NFL futility.
