Andy Reid and the Chiefs Are Running New Plays In Playoffs

Innovative Tactics and Unexpected Moves in the Postseason

Andy Reid is widely regarded as the most creative and innovative head coach and play-caller in the NFL — and for good reason. With three Super Bowl titles as a head coach and another as an assistant, his résumé speaks for itself.
Of course, having Patrick Mahomes, the most dynamic quarterback since Tom Brady, doesn’t hurt. But Reid's brilliance goes far beyond just having elite talent under center.

What sets Reid apart is his ability to adapt and evolve his offensive schemes to maximize his players' strengths while keeping opponents on their toes. Whether it’s designing new plays with limited practice time or pulling off trick plays in the biggest moments, Reid constantly finds ways to stay one step ahead.

That was exactly the case in the Chiefs' 32-29 win over the Bills in the AFC Championship. ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky highlighted two red zone plays from that game that he’d never seen Kansas City run before — both resulting in touchdowns.

The first was a 12-personnel counter run where Kareem Hunt nearly walked into the end zone. The second was a 12-personnel counter keeper that allowed Patrick Mahomes to jog in for six points.

Orlovsky noted that it felt like Andy Reid and the Chiefs had been saving those plays for the perfect moment, catching Buffalo's defense completely off guard and accounting for 14 of their 32 points.

When Reid is in playoff mode, he’s on an entirely different level than most coaches in the league. The Eagles need to be prepared to adapt quickly because it wouldn’t be surprising if Reid and the Chiefs dial up something unexpected on Sunday.
