On his way to a medical appointment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Gen. Colin Powell got a flat tire on the Washington D.C. beltway yesterday.  No big deal.

What he didn't expect was an amputee -  a Marine Corps vet who lost his leg while working as a civilian in Afghanistan - to stop and change it.

Powell didn't catch the guy's name, but the good Samaritan grabbed a selfie and sent it to back Powell, thanking him for his service. Anthony Maggert is his name. Goes by Maddog.

Maggert says he'd have stopped for anyone in need.

Powell says Maggert reminded him  "what this country is all about and why it is so great. Let's stop screaming at each other. Let's just take care of each other."

Maggert tells NBC's Today Show he retired from the military in June 2018 after 23 years in. He is now studying to become a chef.

Powell is the former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  The event, he says, "made my day."
