While the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers started as the 9th and 10th cavalries in 1866, these African Americans continued to serve under this title for almost a century. From battling Indians and protecting settlers to fighting in Cuba and the Spanish-American War and beyond, these men served under the name given to them by Native Americans as a sign of respect.
