Never Forget.
Nonprofit Tunnel to Towers Chairman and CEO Frank Siller is marking the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks by walking 537 miles from Arlington, Virginia to New York City.
“Twenty years ago, we lost 2,977 great Americans, many of which were on their way to work,” he said.
Siller kicked off the Never Forget Walk Sunday at Arlington Fire Station
5 surrounded by family, friends and supporters.
“I’m going to embrace every challenge there is because what I’m doing is nothing compared to what these great heroes have done, when they give up their lives protecting us,” he said. “This is a very small thing compared to what they’ve done."
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is dedicated to honoring the sacrifice of Siller’s brother, New York City firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others on Sept. 11, 2001.
Stephen Siller had just finished a shift in Brooklyn and was headed home to play golf with his brothers when the hijacked airlines struck the World Trade Center Towers.
He immediately turned around and made his way to the scene.
“While saving other lives, he gave up his own,” he said.
Tunnel to Towers was formed shortly after the attacks to honor the lives of those lost. For 20 years has supported the nation’s veterans, first responders, and their families by providing them with mortgage-free homes.
Prior to beginning his walk, Siller presented a paid-off the mortgage to the widow of a fallen firefighter in Virginia.
“This is how I want to begin my 537-mile journey, from the Pentagon to Shanksville to Ground Zero,” he said.
Siller has been preparing for the walk for a year.
“I figured I walked over 6,000 miles preparing,” he said.
