One does not just bestow the honorary title of Civilian Aide Emeritus on Samwise Gamgee, but that's exactly what happened to the actor who played him by the secretary of the Army at a ceremony in the Pentagon this month.

Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth awarded actor Sean Astin with the honor for his ten years of service as Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA).

"To receive the honor of becoming a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army Emeritus fills me with a renewed sense of mission," the actor said in a press release. "In particular, in 2023 I hope to support the recruiting command with creativity and purpose as the nation looks to grow the next generation of leaders. People need to know they have what it takes to serve in the Army, and I want to help them understand what’s possible."

Astin is best known for his roles in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Goonies," "Rudy," and "Stranger Things."

The CASA program recruits notable people from each state and several U.S. territories to help represent the Army and advise the secretary of the Army on regional affairs. Astin served as the CASA to California for ten years and continues to support the Army.
