A U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter flew over Niagara Falls in a daring rescue that reportedly has turned recovery operation.

A 60-year-old woman reportedly drove her vehicle into the river and apparently expired prior to being rescued. As her car drifted perilously close to going over the edge of the Niagara Falls, the Coast Guard swept in with a rescue swimmer lowered by cable to reach the car.

New York State Parks Police Capt. Christopher Rola said the initial call came just before noon on Wednesday, "Dispatch was notified of a black vehicle in the Niagara River near the pedestrian bridge floating down the brink of the Falls. Our patrol arrived and observed the vehicle, and contacted our partners."

Dramatic pictures and footage of the event, which occurred just 50 yards from the edge of the falls, was filmed by a local news reporter on the scene and uploaded to social media.

An investigation has been launched to understand the circumstances under which the woman's vehicle ended up in the river.
