The Association of the United States Army (AUSA) continues its wildly successful Medal of Honor comic book series, this time telling the story of World War I veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Samuel Woodfill.

AUSA has teamed up with veterans of the comic book industry like writer Chuck Dixon to introduce new audiences to real-life acts of valor through the Medal of Honor series.

The latest issue about a soldier who was called the greatest American soldier in the war by Gen. John Pershing. Woodfill enlisted in the Army at a young age and served with expeditionary forces in the Philippines for three years and then found himself guarding the US border during the Mexican Civil War. When World War I began, and led men in combat in France near Cunel in 1918.

Woodfill was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions taken that September during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. During the bloody fighting, Woodfill led from the front, eliminating German machine gun positions, taking enemy prisoners of war, and even engaging in the enemy with a pick axe when he ran out of ammunition.

Having been granted a temporary commission during the war, the newly promoted Captain Woodfill had to start over again as a Sergeant after the war, retiring as a Master Sergeant. Despite being one of the most celebrated veterans of the war, Woodfill struggled after the war but was again given a commission during World War II and served as an instructor.

Chuck Dixon and the talented industry veteran artists who put together the Woodfill edition of the MOH series bring his story to life in a new way, one that may speak to young people in a way that dusty histories may not. The best part is that the comic is available right now, and for free, courtesy of AUSA.
