The Washington Nationals hosted their first Base HIIT workout of the season Thursday, welcoming approximately 150 service members to the ballpark for high-intensity interval training and the chance to win prizes like autographed baseballs and premium tickets.
“We are known for all of the pageantry and all of the tributes we do for the troops during games, but we are always saying to the commanders – how can we actually help people where they live, work and play,” said Washington Nationals Senior Vice President of Community Engagement Gregory McCarthy.
“The commanders say to us – my guys and girls have to do PT every month; can you make that fun? So, we have a baseball field; we have bullpens; we have stairs; and we said, let’s have the airmen out here for the morning and work out on a Major League field. And I think they are having a good time.”
The workout is the first of six scheduled this season and provides a unique opportunity for service members to take the field at Nationals Park, utilizing the field, bullpens and stadium steps in a rotation of five-minute workout stations.
“The men and women in the military make so many sacrifices for our country, and we are just so pleased to be able to give them this experience, and we really hope they enjoy it,” added McCarthy.

The Nats will also host Military Appreciation Day on April 20, as they face the Arirzona Diamondbacks at 7:05 p.m. Active duty, dependents, veterans, retirees and reservists with military ID or proof of service will receive two complimentary tickets will supplies last.
Tickets can be claimed at the Home Plate Box Office beginning that day at 5:30 p.m. Click here for more information on the Patriotic Series presented by PenFed.
