Shuttered by the Army in 2011 amid budget cuts, Fort Monmouth straddles across three towns in New Jersey: Eatontown, Tinton, and Oceanport.

In the 1920s the post was the site of the first deployment of a radio-equipped meteorological balloon. Over the years it served the Signal Corps and Chaplain services as well.

During World War II, Fort Monmouth housed tens of thousands of soldiers and even had a film studio that served as an Army training lab.

But today, the entire post may be turned into a massive film studio complete with sound stages and post-production facilities as streaming entertainment giant Netflix has placed a bid on a 300-acre plot of land there.

Netflix has bid the plot of land recently appraised at being worth $54 million, according to recent reports.

Key endorsements have come from New Jersey's governor, Phil Murphy, eyes potential tax revenue as well as Netflix bringing well-paying, high-quality jobs to his state. Netflix has other studios in New Mexico and Brooklyn, New York.
