University of Maryland Global Campus has a long and successful history of providing higher learning educational services to the United States Navy to ensure its personnel achieves their higher educational goals.

The Navy celebrated its 246th birthday on October 13 amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. UMGC Military Education Coordinators in San Diego, Calif., have kept the lines of communication open with local regional advisors and staff for Navy College since the program shifted to a virtual format in the early days of the pandemic.

UMGC’s Military Education Coordinators have a strong understanding of the tuition assistance process, which allows them to help the student enroll while also referring them to Navy support staff when needed.

Their knowledge of Navy enlisted job ratings allows them to help maximize a sailor's Joint Services Transcript credits so they can achieve their educational goals in a timely manner. Sometimes career goals are not a reflection of the sailor’s Naval experience, so UMGC’s Military Education Coordinators can also help guide them toward degrees and certificates that will assist them with their future careers.

The ESS from the Naval Special Warfare School recently reached out to compliment UMGC Military Education Coordinator, Katy Sabala, on her work with its service members. She mentioned how patient and prompt she is, as well as motivating and encouraging to students who are pursuing their degree with UMGC. Students who have had dealings with her have referred her to other students looking to start their education, too.

Sabala also helped with the first pilot that started early this year for the U.S. Navy Community College. She assisted sailors, Marines and Coast Guard service members with enrollment in pilot classes while providing feedback to improve the process.

In Hawaii, UMGC Military Education Coordinators have also served the university’s Navy students remotely during the pandemic and have actively stayed in touch with the local Navy College staff since operations shifted to virtual last year.

Just like in San Diego, Military Education Coordinators in Hawaii understand the process for tuition assistance, which allows them to help students enroll while also referring them to Navy support staff when needed. Jennifer Matos, one of the Hawaii MECs, also assisted with the first pilot for the U.S. Navy Community College.

Hampton Roads, Virginia supports the largest Naval base in the world, Norfolk Naval Station. UMGC’s long and rich history with the Navy extends back a generation there.

As a leader in online education, UMGC has been driving innovation in online education for more than 20 years. UMGC was among the first universities anywhere to offer web-based back in 1997. UMGC established an external office in Hampton Roads so its representatives could support this trend, and provide highly personalized support at the Navy College offices.

Advising services, testing, and hybrid in-class courses are available on several bases and are easily accessible throughout Hampton Roads. More recently and in immediate response to COVID limitations, a Virtual Advising Room was established, is flourishing, and is ready to support military members in the region to connect real-time and face to face from the comfort and safety of home or work.

Of note is a partnered relationship with Thomas Nelson Community College. This relationship is unique in that it is designed as a co-operated partnership to support the Navy and veteran students, specifically in the cybersecurity and IT fields. In addition to a full-time UMGC staff member in residence, UMGC provides classes on campus for sailors continuing with their education.

This partnership is reflective of UMGC’s presence as an out-of-state university working effectively and constructively with a large Navy community and their local community colleges.
