WATCH: Wayne Rooney gets trucked by New England goalie

MLS defenses have had loads of trouble stopping Wayne Rooney since he joined D.C. United last summer. And Saturday night, New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner took a more...direct approach to keep Rooney from scoring.

In the 55th minute of the match, Rooney went after a pass over the top from teammate Russell Canouse, Turner racing out of his box to try and get to the ball first. Turner did not get to the ball, but he got a ton of Rooney, delivering a crushing hit on the English forward.

“It’s like being in a car crash,” Rooney told reporters after the match. “I think it’s misjudgment by the goalkeeper. As I turned, I see him right on top of me and it was poor judgement.”

Turner was immediately issued a red card and disqualified from the match, New England forced to sub off an outfield player to bring in back-up goalie Brad Knighton. 

The collision couldn't even stop Rooney from scoring, however, as he buried a penalty kick in the 90th minute to earn United a 1-1 draw.

The incident was eerily reminiscent of an iconic moment from the 1982 World Cup, when German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher trucked France's Patrick Battison. The collision knocked Battison unconscious, the defender losing two teeth and suffering three broken ribs. 

Thankfully, Rooney said he's feeling fine, but still quite sore.

“It’s sore, but I’ll be okay,” Rooney told reporters. “A bit of everything – chest, shoulder, a bit of my face." 

"It’s one of those things, and I’m sure he meant no harm in it. He just misjudged it.”
