Training Camp Notebook: Haskins has his best day, WR competition revs up

RICHMOND – The Redskins offense ruled the day on Sunday. It was touchdown after touchdown, especially in the red zone where a lot of the offensive work came. It was the last day of install and another injury-free day.

QB Report – Dwayne Haskins had his best day by a mile so far in Richmond, and likely as a Redskin. Of course, he's played zero actual games yet, but Haskins dotted receivers all over the field on Sunday. At one point he scored on four straight red-zone plays, including an unbelievable ball to Trey Quinn over the outstretched arms of Josh Norman. The fans went nuts as Quinn spiked the ball in celebration.
Colt McCoy served as QB1 after his scheduled rest day Saturday and looked sharp. Case Keenum stacked yet another solid day on his opening three-day run and still likely leads the horse race. The huge question coming out of Sunday is whether Haskins turned some corner or if he simply had a good day. I'd expect the latter. It's going to be up and down. He's a rookie, but a talented one so when it's right it's going to be great and Sunday was a great day.
Reed Sits, Sprinkle Shines – Jordan Reed had a scheduled maintenance day on Sunday as he continues to work back into the swing of things. Giving him too much too soon is a surefire way to aggravate an injury, so this is a smart plan by the training staff and the team. Reed’s looked spectacular. The primary goal is to not mess things up.
With more reps to go around, Jeremy Sprinkle stepped up. He caught every kind of ball on Sunday. Some contested, some wide open. Some on the sideline, some up the seam. I didn’t have Sprinkle’s roster position as a lock coming into camp thanks to Matt Flanagan’s strong finish to 2018, but there’s no question who has been the better player so far in 2019. The 5th rounder out of Arkansas looks to have had some things click in his 3rd year.

Robert Davis emerges  Cam Sims has looked terrific all spring and into camp, but he’s not the only young receiver who has flashed. Robert Davis, the sixth-round pick in 2017 from Georgia State, has looked better and better every single day as he comes back from last year’s leg injury.

Davis is a big body with high end explosiveness. He’s fast and has gotten pretty good at leveraging that speed to break off routes underneath. If he can consistently catch the ball, he’s going to be a factor. Figuring out where is hard, but he’s got so much talent that he might make himself hard to ignore.

GREAT PLAY! Case Keenum sees CB Adonis Alexander in press coverage on WR Robert Davis on left and takes his match up. Keenum delivers a good ball with nice touch and Robert Davis skies in the air and plucks it in the end zone. Launches the ball in celebration #Redskins pic.twitter.com/FygtFccEQg

Morgan Moses wears No. 71 – Every day there is a Redskins player who takes the podium as opposed to the usual post-practice scrums. Today that was Morgan Moses, and he was wearing Trent Williams’ jersey.

"Ya know, I just asked for, ya know, a couple of pizzas and a Pepsi,” Morgan quipped as if he were Williams. “It didn't work out, but ya know, I'm here now so that's all that matters. It's time to get ready for the Eagles Week 1."

When Moses broke character and started talking about Williams, he said he misses him and hopes he returns soon.

“I mean I expect him to come back. He loves football, just like every one of us does. I am pretty sure he wants to be here. Obviously, he has to figure out some things and they have to figure out some things that’s above my pay grade,” Moses said. “Once they figure that out he'll be here. I have full confidence in the guy when he shows up, he's going to be the best left tackle in the NFL still. He’s going to be ready to play and he’s not going to miss a beat. It’s the same offense we’ve been running the last four or five years. That being said the guy is I mean he’s an unbelievable talent in the NFL, man. There’s not too many left tackles out there doing what he does every week."
