'We Are the Dream' documentary featuring Oakland students needs your vote

An Emmy-winning documentary about Oakland kids preparing for a prestigious speech contest is up for another major award and you have a chance to judge it.

The spotlight is shining on "We Are the Dream: The Kids of the Oakland MLK Oratorical Fest."

This isn't debate club, but the kids are convincing.

It’s also not drama club, but they are passionate and it’s not easy work.

In what's become an Oakland tradition, up to 1,100 kids that each year get up in front of theater full of spectators to raise their voices against social injustice and racism at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Festival. They range in age from preschool all the way through 12th grade.

The documentary, executive produced by Oscar winner and East Bay native Mahershala Ali, debuted last month on HBO.

Oratorical Fest Producer Awele Makeba said it’s getting even more attention now.

"It received an Emmy award in September and now we’ve been nominated for an NAACP Image Award, and the public gets to vote," she told KCBS Radio.

You can watch the documentary for free on the HBO website.

Online voting ends Friday. Click here to vote.
