Widely known for having some of the most extravagant benefits and perks, from free meals to gym memberships, some Silicon Valley companies are winnowing down on their extra services for employees.
Meta, Facebook's parent company, has reportedly diminished or restricted benefits as it brings employees back to the office to work in-person, according to a recent post on the professional network site, Blind, as first reported by SFGATE.
One of the company's engineers, with a total compensation of $850,000, griped on in a post last week that these perks have been cut dramatically following his return to the office.
These benefit cuts include new restrictions on free meals: "Dinner pushed out to 630PM. NO Togo boxes, NO reusable containers one can bring even for lunch and other stuff :( :(My kids love the variety of food I bring from Meta," the poster wrote.
The user also complained about one service in particular that they will miss – laundry.
"I have been using laundry benefit and love that cleaners come home, pick up stuff and bring it back," they wrote. "Such a helpful one where clothes are folded and I don’t have to worry much and focus that time for my axis work."
They also noted that "childcare reimbursements" were cut this year, and their total compensation went down by $200,000 because of the stock market crash.
The post did not garner much sympathy from the community, with one person commenting, "zuck will fold the clothes himself for you."
Another wrote, "You are not supposed to feed your children with stolen food."
Since the post went up on Thursday last week, it's racked up over 1,500 comments from others in the community.
According to Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton, the company decided to cut some services as hybrid work schedules became the new normal.
"As we return to the office, we’ve adjusted on-site services and amenities to better reflect the needs of our hybrid workforce," she wrote in a statement to KCBS Radio on Tuesday. "We believe people and teams will be increasingly distributed in the future, and we're committed to building an experience that helps everyone be successful."
