A teenage girl was shot to death in Oakland late Wednesday night - the city’s 109th homicide this year, equaling its total from all of 2020.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at Bancroft Ave.
at 11:28 p.m. and found evidence of gunfire, authorities said.

Moments later, a 15-year-old female Oakland resident arrived at a local hospital with at least one gunshot wound and succumbed to her injuries.
The victim’s identity is being withheld, pending next of kin notification.
An investigation into the crime remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 510-238-3821.
The shooting marks the 109th homicide in Oakland this year, the same number as all of 2020, officials confirmed to KCBS.
At this time last year, police had investigated 80 homicides in the city, according to the East Bay Times.
In the wake of the somber milestone and tragic shooting, the Oakland Police Officers’ Association released a statement which called on the city to "make the safety of Oakland citizens its top priority."
"The tragedy of a 15-year-old’s life being extinguished on an Oakland street, epitomizes the violence our city’s residents and police officers are seeing daily," union President Barry Donelan said. "Oakland’s hardworking but dwindling ranks of police officers are striving to bring justice to the families of those impacted by homicide, have responded to over 575 shootings so far this year, and recovered almost 1,000 firearms. All despite the lack of support from the majority of Oakland’s city council that voted to defund the police and remain silent in the face of these violent tragedies. When are Oakland residents going to hold their elected officials accountable for the violence on our streets?"
Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong earlier this week said his department is struggling with staffing shortages. City data revealed that the department currently employs its lowest amount of officers since December, 2014.
