Two students in the Santa Rosa City Schools District tested positive for COVID-19 after just two days of in-person instruction, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports.
One student attends Maria Carillo High School and the other attends Rincon Valley Middle School. Both are quarantining for the required 10 to 14 days, according to a letter acquired by the paper which was sent out to parents, guardians, students and staff.
After consultation with Sonoma County’s Health Services department, officials determined that no other students were exposed to the virus.
"The safety of students and staff continues to be our first priority," District spokesperson Beth Berk told the paper in an email. "Parents should know that, while we can’t control the virus itself or who it infects, we can enforce mask-wearing, cleaning practices and proper notification to reduce any spread or exposure."
A complete disinfecting will be done at both schools.
The positive cases will not change the COVID-19 protocols put in place last spring when the district first reopened for limited in-person learning.
Sonoma County, like many regions both in the Bay Area and across the country, has been increasingly overwhelmed by a rise in COVID cases and the proliferation of the delta variant throughout the community. The county reported another 142 new cases on Saturday.
