A 57-year-old Asian man was brutally assaulted in Oakland on 10th St. between Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Jefferson St, shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday.
The unprovoked attack, which was captured on a camera phone, is yet another incident of violence against the Asian American community.
The video shows the victim struggling on the sidewalk with the suspect repeatedly punching and restraining him. The victim eventually freed himself and chased the suspect, who was able to run to his car and drive away.
The victim told KPIX-5 he was on his way to pick up his morning coffee when he was attacked from behind. He said he suffered bruising and swelling to his face, but the suspect did not successfully take his wallet.
"The perpetrator was sitting on top of the victim, holding him down physically and landing blows to his face, his chest, and the victim was struggling, screaming for help," witness Angela Chuk said. "It lasted maybe 20 to 30 seconds, as we were yelling for him to stop."
Chuk banged on the window in an effort to distract the suspect, while her brother called 911 and her sister recorded the video from the window of an Oakland condo.
"It is an entirely different experience, seeing it firsthand, right outside my brother’s window," said Chuk. "It was chilling, it was disturbing, it was unthinkable, it was horrifying."
The family hopes that by sharing the video someone will recognize the assailant, as reported by KPIX-5.
The Oakland Police Department has not commented on the incident.
