Brian Edward Jones confessed to police last month that on Feb. 18, 2001, he killed his girlfriend, Janet Jones Luxford, and dumped her body in a suitcase in Bessemer, Alabama, according to the paper.

After Jones, 62, told Bessemer Police Department what had happened he was charged with murder and abuse of a corpse, according to the paper.

"We were in disbelief that somebody had come to us to confess to a murder much less than one that is 21 years old," Lt. Christian Clemons told the paper.

The local police didn't even know it had occurred, but Luxford was reported missing by her daughter to the Napa Police Department in California in 2002, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

According to the site, in September 2002 Luxford's daughter told Napa police that in September 2001, Luxford, 41-years-old at the time, left her home in Jacksonville, Florida and was last seen at a motel in Bessemer, Alabama.

Jones told police that he and Luxford were in a relationship at the time, and that her death was an accident following a fight between the two of them, according to the paper. He had hit Luxford in the throat with a golf club, leading to her death.

After Jones' confession to police in March, he led them to her remains. They have not yet been confirmed as Luxford's by the coroner's office, the paper reported.

Jones finally came forward after his parents died last year. He claimed he kept the secret because he didn’t want to "disappoint his parents," according to the paper. He unburdened himself because he wanted Luxford to finally get a "proper burial," the paper reported.

Jones is currently being held in Jefferson County Jail on $765,000 bonds.

The Bessemer Police Department did not respond to KCBS Radio's request for comment at the time of publication.
