It’s dark. It’s dank. It’s a very unpleasant place to call home.

In nine by five concrete cell, cold saltwater wind whistling thru, Machine Gun Kelly said five words should be written in fire on the walls of his cell: "Nothing can be worth this." With COVID-19 restrictions relaxed, The Rock has reopened.

"The first time in a year that we’ve allowed people inside the cell block," National Park Service Ranger Charlie Strickfaden told KCBS Radio.

Ferries will operate at reduced capacity. Those interested in visiting the Cell House must register for the Cell House Audio Tour.

"It is my pleasure to begin welcoming visitors back to Alcatraz Island. We have been working closely with our public health partners to align our operations with local guidance and provide access to the island for the first time this year," said Laura Joss, general superintendent of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Visitors are expected to wear masks and follow distancing guidelines.
