A San Jose man was killed after getting out of his vehicle following a freeway crash early Sunday near downtown San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man, 40, was driving a 1972 Chevy Impala that entered northbound I-280 from the 4th St. on-ramp and was crossing lanes when it was hit by a Toyota Prius about 2:20 a.m. When the vehicles ended up in the far-left lane and center median, the drivers got out of their cars.

They were standing near the crash site when a sedan came up in the left lane and hit both cars at high speed, a CHP spokesperson said.

The Impala driver, who had been standing near his car, was ejected over the guardrail and into a parking lot below. He died at the scene.

His name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Two men in the sedan suffered minor injuries.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash, officials confirmed. It’s under investigation.
