ANTIOCH, Calif. (KCBS RADIO) - As California gas prices hit a difficult milestone, an East Bay city is stepping up to help Meals on Wheels drivers pay for gas.

California's average gas price topped $6 a gallon Tuesday for the first time ever, although it’s been above that in the Bay Area for a while.
To relieve some pain at the pump, Antioch has decided to buy gas cards for Meals on Wheels, which has had trouble retaining volunteer drivers largely due to gas prices.
The service is highly important, as they provide nutritious home-delivered meals to seniors and people with disabilities.
"To be honest they were very modest because they asked for $10,000," Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe told KCBS Radio. "I said no we’re going to give you $25,000 because this is not a joke. These gas prices, as we used to say back in the day, are 'off the chain.'"
Meanwhile, commuters are also trying to find relief from record gas prices. Keagan Eugean in San Francisco just decided to ditch his gas guzzler. "I wouldn’t necessarily buy a car right now, but I have to because I have to downsize from an SUV to one that gets much better gas mileage," he explained.
The price at the pump has jumped a whopping $1.36 since the beginning of the year. Gas prices are spiking as the result of inflation, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and increased demand.
