If you lock your bicycle into the Caltrans bike shuttle at the MacArthur BART Station in Oakland, you can hitch a ride across the Bay Bridge for $1, a fee which hasn't changed in 35 years.

"It is a well kept secret, but I don't know if it will be for long," Bay Area commuter Karl Robillard told KCBS Radio.

Robillard took the bike shuttle to work at Twitter Tuesday morning for the first time since the pandemic began. "I can't believe how happy I am to be back on here," he said. "There were many weeks and months where I just thought this would never happen again."

Coronavirus has had a major impact on the shuttle service, a shuttle employee admitted to KCBS Radio. "It used to be more popular without the pandemic going on," he said. "It used to be like 30 riders a day and it's down to like 10 right now."

However, that may change as more people go back to the office and as gas prices soar past $5.50 across the Bay Area.

The Bay Bridge bike shuttle runs during peak commute periods and will pick up riders at 6:20 a.m., 6:40 a.m., 7:00 a.m., 7:25 am, 7:45 a.m., 8:10 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. in Oakland. At other times, bikes may be carried on BART or AC Transit.

The bike shuttle is reserved for bike commuters, but the shuttle driver said folks without a bike may also catch a ride, if there's room.
