The Bay Area Rapid Transit is accepting submissions to be a part of their new team of digital artists for the agency's upcoming anime and manga style art projects.

The selected roster will design a series of original anime-style mascots, along with potentially illustrations, comics, physical merchandise, digital goods, motion-tracked character models, short animations and other media.

Anime and manga are a form of Japanese storytelling media which are characterized by their bright and colorful graphics and often with action filled sequences. Anime refers to animated shows or movies while manga refers to comic books or graphic novels.

The goal of the projects is to promote public transportation in the Bay Area, share destinations accessible by public transit, and increase youth and Gen Z engagement and weekend ridership, according to the agency's website.

The portal for artists to submit applications is live until August 24. Artists are asked to include their portfolio which features a range of their work, such as fan art, personal art and commercial art. The agency will judge submissions based on the diversity of styles which are "family friendly, bright, and cheerful, as well as uniqueness of characters and representative of diversity and inclusion, and demonstrated experience, interest, and engagement in the digital space and creation of fan art," officials said.

Artists for the first “character design” projects will be selected by mid-September. Additional artists will also be chosen as new opportunities become available.

Commissioned artists will receive fees of up to $500 to $5,000 per project. Artists must be 18 years or older and live in California to be eligible.
