Berkeley residents will need to start showing proof of vaccination in restaurants, gyms and large indoor events starting next week.

According to the health order issued Wednesday, starting Oct. 15, employees of those businesses and other specified facilities are also going to be required to be vaccinated or tested weekly for the coronavirus.

Starting Sept. 10, people must show proof of full vaccination and a photo ID to enter these establishments, according to the order from City of Berkeley Health Officer Dr. Lisa Hernandez.

And by Oct. 15, indoor businesses like restaurants and gyms, and other facilities like adult care facilities, adult day programs, dental offices, pharmacies and public and private childcare sites must have employees all vaccinated or tested weekly.

All employees, including contractors, volunteers, custodians, maintenance and other workers who enter the businesses, are covered by the order.

Workers who are not vaccinated due to a religious belief must provide a signed letter under penalty of perjury, under the order. Employees with a medical condition must provide a letter signed by a licensed medical provider. The employee would still have to get tested weekly.

People who don’t comply are subject to punishment by fine, imprisonment, or both.
