New COVID-19 cases in the state have topped all previous one-day highs, with a record 30,075 new cases reported Saturday.
The state's seven-day positivity rate is is 10.3% and the 14-day positivity rate is 8.1%. Deaths due to COVID-19 complications continue to mount, approaching the grim milestone of 20,000 since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
The state's surge in new cases continues at transmission rates not previously seen in the pandemic. The California Department of Public Health reported a single-day high of over 20,000 new cases just a few days ago.
A state stay-at-home order mandates regions close certain businesses and restrict movement of residents when ICU capacity in the area drops below 15%.
Although many Bay Area counties are not yet required by the state to cease operations, five counties and the City of Berkeley announced Friday they'd be preemptively adopting harsher restrictions as the virus continues to surge locally: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Santa Clara and San Francisco.
Orders in most counties will take effect Sunday evening and last until at least January 4.
