With California averaging close to 50,000 new coronavirus cases each day, healthcare workers from around the state are pleading with us to remain vigilant over the holidays.
Nearly 19,000 Californians are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 and 95,000 people have tested positive for the virus in the last two days.
The current 14-day test positivity rate is high at 12.2%.
Healthcare professionals across the state are worried, and released a video on Tuesday warning people not to gather for Christmas. One physician from Sutter said in the video: "Don’t be the person that gives COVID-19 to someone you love or know. You may not forgive yourself for that."
Some implored people to stay away from others to save lives.
"If we continue to gather indoors at the rate that we are, many more of us will not see the holidays next year.” Another warned: "If people continue to gather for the upcoming holidays, we are going to cripple our hospital system."
The California death toll will likely top 23,000 Wednesday, and the number of Californians sickened by this virus will probably hit the two million mark on Christmas Day. Statewide, ICU availability is below 2%.
