The union representing faculty members at City College of San Francisco has announced a tentative agreement with administrators to resolve a standoff over how best to handle a major budget shortfall.
These faculty members have been rallying and organizing since they received the news last month that more than 100 teachers would face possible layoffs, as the college grapples with financial troubles related to flagging enrollment.
Now, late-night negotiations have led to a tentative agreement that would halt the layoffs in exchange for salary cuts.
Despite the agreement, union members went forward with a planned rally and march in downtown San Francisco.
“It’s a bitter sweet agreement right?”, said one attendee. “We are able to save all the jobs of our full-timers and part-timers, but it’s on the backs of our educators and students.”
Organizer Beatriz Herrera said the school simply needs more funding to carry out its mission serving a diverse student body.
“You know, the fight continues until we’re able to identify key sources of revenue from the city and state level,” she told KCBS Radio. “We’re going to continue coming back to this problem, which seems to be increasing with every semester.”
A spokesperson for the college hailed the agreement, and said further details will be announced during a meeting of the school’s board of trustees on Monday.
