Contra Costa County introduced a new incentive program this week where people can earn $100 per individual they refer to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

The initiative is called the Helping Hands Referral Program and anyone 14 years old or older is eligible to receive the cash reward, as long as the unvaccinated individual they refer signs up for the shot through the program’s website.

Referrers will gain the $100 prize after the person receiving shot is fully inoculated. For the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, they will earn $50 after the first dose, and the final $50 following the second.

Contra Costa County Supervisor Federal Glover said the program is in response to the significant surge in cases due to the delta variant, specifically among young people and communities of color.

County data revealed that 50% of cases in the past month were among Black and Latinx residents, groups that account for 35% of the population.

"COVID -19 continues to take a painfully disproportionate toll on our communities of color,” Glover said through a release. “CCHS is asking you to partner with us in this call-to-action by continuing the invaluable work you are already doing – connecting with our most vulnerable community members – to help people stay safe and healthy by getting vaccinated."
