As expected, Contra Costa County officials has announced expansion of the county's COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to anyone ages 16 and older, effective immediately.
Contra Costa County Health Director Anna Roth said on Tuesday the move comes due an increased vaccine supply from both the state and federal governments, receiving roughly 85,000 doses last week alone.
Roth added that there are currently "thousands of appointments available" at community clinics. The change impacts an additional 375,000 residents.
"Since we gave the first dose in our county on December 15, getting vaccine to everyone and anyone has been our top priority," Roth said. "Removing barriers of all kinds, including confusing eligibility criteria is an important step in furthering our equity goals. This is an important day."
Appointments are still required at Contra Costa Health Services vaccine clinics and each patient must have their own appointment, officials said.
The California Department of Public Health announced on March 25 that all Californians ages 50 and older will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine beginning Thursday, putting Contra Costa County ahead of schedule.
