Oakland officials are investigating multiple homicides and shootings after another violent weekend in the city during an already brutal year left Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong searching for more answers.
The first murder occurred early Friday morning at the 1400 block of 20th Ave. while another took place Sunday morning at the 19000 block of Broadway. The identities of the victims in each case have been withheld until notification of their next-of-kin.
In addition, authorities are investigating nearly a dozen shootings across the city, including one on Saturday evening at a barbershop at the 5200 block of College Ave. A 23-year-old San Leandro man was shot and died from his injuries Monday afternoon. A second gunshot victim, a 47-year-old Richmond resident, remained in critical condition as of Monday.
Anyone with information about any of the homicides is asked to call 510-238-3821 or use the tip line at 510-238-7950. No suspects have been identified in any of the cases.
Detectives are also investigating a shooting during a sideshow in East Oakland Monday morning. Two people have been arrested, while two firearms were recovered and four vehicles were towed.
Chief Armstrong met with residents and business owners on Monday in the areas impacted by last weekend’s violence.
Oakland police have investigated 85 homicides this year, compared to 64 at this time in 2020. Last week alone saw 48 instances of gunfire, and officers recovered 27 firearms, bringing the yearly total to 798.
"(I want to) let them know that I am focused on the violence. This tragic situation continues to occur in our city. I want to let them know that I’m on the ground and I want to hear from them about what we can do better, how we can partner together to address this violence," he said during a press conference. "It’s definitely a sad weekend for the city of Oakland. It definitely shows that the level of violence in Oakland has not come down, not to my liking."
