Six crew members aboard a cargo ship in San Francisco Bay sickened with COVID-19 have been brought to shore for treatment, officials have confirmed to KCBS Radio.

The San Francisco Fire Department on Monday helped in an effort to bring the sailors off of the ship known as the Global Striker, a container vessel from the Philippines. Authorities said 19 of the 21-person crew are experiencing flu-like symptoms.

The six crew members in need of further treatment was taken to Pier 26, then to local hospitals.

"At this time, we're using what we call universal precautions – that's the gloves and the goggles and the gowns and the face masks you've seen throughout this pandemic," Lt. Jonathan Baxter told KCBS Radio's Jeff Bell and Patti Reising.

They're listed in good condition and are showing "mild" symptoms, Baxter added.

The remaining crew – 15 members – will quarantine aboard the vessel.

The U.S. Coast Guard also assisted in the effort.
